Acne

Spots that keep coming back, on a schedule you did not choose. The clinic treats this as a medical problem with a twelve week arc, not as a facial you book when it flares.

What it actually is

Acne is a blocked follicle that has become inflamed. Oil and dead skin plug the opening, bacteria that live on everybody's skin multiply behind the plug, and the immune response is the red, sore part you can see. It is not caused by being unclean, and washing harder makes it worse rather than better.

What causes it

  • Hormonal shifts, which is why adult acne so often sits along the jaw and chin and why it tracks the menstrual cycle.
  • Skin that produces more oil than the follicle can clear, usually inherited rather than acquired.
  • Occlusion from heavy skincare, hair product, sports helmets or a phone screen held against one cheek.
  • Products bought to fix it. Stripping the skin with acid twice a day is one of the most common reasons an acne plan stalls.

Before you book anything

If you have deep painful nodules, acne on the chest and back as well as the face, or acne that is already leaving pitted scars, see a GP and ask for a dermatology referral. There are prescription treatments that work better and faster than anything a medispa owns, and starting with us would cost you months.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis. It is what we would say in the room, written down so you can read it before deciding whether to come in.

What treatment can do

We can reduce how much oil the skin makes, clear the plugs that are already there, and calm the inflammation so that fewer lesions become the kind that scar. Most people see the flare rate drop before they see the skin look clear, which is the order it happens in.

What it cannot do

We cannot make acne permanently go away, because the tendency to it is largely inherited. We also cannot fix acne and acne scarring at the same time. Scarring work waits until the skin has been quiet for a few months, because resurfacing inflamed skin makes the marks worse.

What a course usually looks like

Twelve weeks is the honest unit. The programme runs as fortnightly appointments with a homecare routine between them, and we photograph at week zero, six and twelve because the improvement is slow enough that you will not notice it day to day. A device course such as AviClear is three sessions a month apart, with the result still building six months after the last one.

Course pricing is lower than the same sessions bought one at a time, and spreading the cost is available over three months on anything above £300.

Or just ask

If it is not on the menu, or you are not sure what to call it, say so in your own words and the team will answer. Ask about this concern.

Where to start

Bring a photograph of it at its worst.

Most concerns look different in clinic lighting at eleven in the morning than they do at home at night. A photograph on your phone is genuinely useful and we would rather see one than take your word for it.
