AviClear

A laser that targets the oil glands directly, for people who want an alternative to long term medication.

Acne & Scarring

What it treats

  • Moderate inflammatory acne
  • Oily skin with recurring breakouts
  • Acne that returns whenever medication stops
  • Back and chest acne

How it works

The laser is set to a wavelength absorbed by sebum, so the energy is taken up by the oil glands themselves rather than by the surrounding skin. Reducing what those glands produce takes away the conditions the bacteria need. Because the glands need time to respond, the meaningful improvement shows up months after the course rather than during it.

Typical course

Three sessions one month apart. Improvement continues for six months after the last.

Who it is not suitable for

Not used during pregnancy, on skin with an active infection, or within six months of finishing oral isotretinoin. Not appropriate if you are unwilling to wait several months to judge the result.

Every treatment here is assessed at consultation first. This list covers the common reasons we would not proceed, and it is not exhaustive. Bring your medication list and tell us about anything you are being treated for.

Questions people ask

How long until it works?

Most of the change happens between three and six months after the third session. If you need clearer skin by next month, this is the wrong treatment and a peel course is the better answer.

Is it permanent?

Studies on this class of device show most people holding the improvement at two years. It is a long lasting reduction rather than a guaranteed cure, and some people need a top up session later.

Does it hurt?

There are brief hot snapping sensations, strongest on the chin and jaw. The device cools the skin between pulses. Most people manage without numbing.
