How it works
The laser fires at a wavelength that pigment absorbs far more readily than the surrounding skin, so the energy lands where the melanin is. The pigment shatters into fragments small enough for the immune system to carry away. Treated spots usually darken and look like coffee grounds for about a week before flaking off.
Typical course
One to three sessions four weeks apart for sun spots. Diffuse pigmentation needs more.
Who it is not suitable for
Not used on tanned skin, during pregnancy, over an undiagnosed or changing lesion, or within six months of oral isotretinoin. If you have melasma we will usually recommend against laser, because it commonly rebounds worse.

Questions people ask
Why will you not treat my melasma with this?
Melasma is driven by hormones and heat as well as light, and pigment lasers frequently make it darker after a temporary improvement. We would rather start with topical treatment, strict sun protection and gentle options than sell you a course that backfires.
Will the spots come back?
The treated ones usually do not, but new ones will form if the sun exposure that caused them continues. Daily SPF is the part that determines whether this holds.
Can I have it in summer?
Not on tanned skin, and not before a sunny holiday. Autumn and winter are the right seasons for pigment work.
